A “neighbour-friend” gave me an audio cassette and asked me to listen to his songs. I must have been 11 or 12 and music still meant rock and Bollywood for me. I took the cassette, heard him for the first time and put it away for the next few years.

Life picked up its pace and I too decided to move on despite that constant ache in my heart. Crying was not an option and putting up a brave face was the best I could do for my siblings and mum. On a chilly winter's day more than two year's later, I rediscovered the cassette in my cupboard and decided to play it rather unsuccessfully. Full with guilt for neglecting a gift for so long, I decided to buy a new one. I saved for a few weeks to buy the latest collection of his songs. Tears rolled down my cheeks as his soulful voice started echoing in my tiny room. The song was chitthi na joi sandesh…

I remember crying for hours after listening to the song and it became a routine for the years to come. Songs like Hazaro Khwahishen Aisi and Bat Niklegi became favourites. My friends did not like the idea of listening to Jagjit Singh in the era of metal. Punk was also making a comeback during those days. I don’t blame them because you cannot associate yourself with his songs without strong emotions.

My habit of listening to gazals took a backseat as I got busier in life, but the love for his music remained in my heart and mind. I still seek refuge in his songs whenever life throws beautiful and not-so-beautiful surprises at me. The news of his death is more shocking for me because I will never be able to see him in person. I will never get a chance to say thank you to him for showing me light at the end of the tunnel, for letting me cry, for making me comfortable, for making me believe that things will be all right.

Only two months ago he was performing in Delhi and I could have gone. Instead I left it for another day. I am feeling very sad, but his songs have come to my rescue once again. Even in his death he ended up teaching me a lesson. Never leave a moment, never wait for things you want to do because there may not be any tomorrow…

Chitthi na koi sandesh is playing as I write this with watery eyes. Thank you sir…vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-87137024813318021242010-08-14T01:42:00.001-07:002010-08-14T01:47:43.546-07:00Kannur Beach House

Nothing can be a more delightful sight than this if you are coming from a big city.

But the excitement was soon taken away when the train reached Kannur Railway Station. Wrestling our way through the mass of locals hurrying to work in nearby towns, we emerged from the railway station to find a place quite like any other busy town.

Shops and malls rose up all over the place, and busy traffic completed the picture of a place on its way to lose its soul to “modernization”.

With a sort of disappointment in my voice I called the owner of the Kannur Beach House, who was more excited about the trip than I was.

We hired an auto-rickshaw to reach the home-stay and the friendly driver offered us a narration of the town's history.

The ricky took a sharp turn to enter a road which seemed never ending. I was so frustrated with the journey that I completely missed the sights until Lisa brought me back to reality.

The ricky had long left civilization and was negotiating curvy roads guiding us to the home-stay. My anger soon ebbed away when we reached a cliff and I could see a thick cover of coconut tress along the coast. Postcard perfect.

We paid the autorickshaw driver and were shown our rooms in the house by a quiet lady, who welcomed us with a warm smile and an open heart.

The sun hung gloriously over a tiny beach that lay squashed in the middle of the roaring sea and the gurgling river. Our weekend home overlooked this pretty sight, stark contrast to the dust and pollution of our cities.

After settling in we were soon greeted by the lovely couple Nazir and Rosi. It did not take long to feel comfortable and at ease. I have stayed in many hostels and home-stays, but what sets this place apart is the friendly nature of Nazir and his family.

One cannot write about Nazir’s place without mentioning the food. It is simple and doesn’t tickle your taste buds with too much spice.

The fresh aroma of the coconut and flavours of Kerala make you eat more than your stomach can take.

And if you are feeling bloated after savouring the coastal Kerala delights from Rosi’s kitchen, using the canoe to explore the backwaters is not a bad idea.

But I am not one of those fitness freaks and settled into one of the hammocks with a book. Trust me it’s divine, the mix of the sounds of the roaring waves and gentle flowing backwater is heavenly.

I did not even realize when I fell asleep only to be woken by Rosi for an evening cuppa. The walk on the beach is very different from other tourist hotspots in the state. You will hardly find a soul to disturb you.

As the sun went back into the clouds after a day’s hard work, we headed back to enjoy some more delicious food.

The sky had donned a beautiful blanket of stars giving us enough natural light to enjoy our drink and indulge in meaningless conversation.

Thank you Rosi and Nazir for the Kannur Beach House. I promise to return very soon.

vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-42958628404676862582009-12-22T22:28:00.001-08:002009-12-22T22:28:49.505-08:00AirportsAirports are simultaneously the happiest and saddest places on earth. The last two weeks have been tough for the country's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The saffron group organised the Chintan Baithak on 10 August in Shimla to discuss the reasons behind its debacle in the Lok Sabha polls. However, the djin of Jinnah largely marred the three-day summit.
The timing could not have been more appropriate for the party's senior leader Jaswant Singh to release his book on the father of Pakistan. The Baithak made it easier for the BJP's top brass to meet over the issue and expel their senior colleague.
What followed this decision was a series of interviews by Mr Singh to bring further embarrassment to the party. He alleged the party leaders of being ignorant of the country's history.
Mr Singh's outburst has earned him some sympathy from party members including Arun Shourie. Mr Shourie openly challenged the BJP leadership and called them incapable of running the party.
Before the BJP could repond to these allegations, two former chief ministers also joined the rebel bandwagon. Bhuvan Chand Khanduri, former chief minister of Uttarakhand, and Rajastan's ex-chief minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia have sounded the rebel bugle.
Many say that the party is missing its patriach and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The party has many decision-makers, resulting in many aspirations.
This is the root cause of the saffron brigade's recent woes. Mr Vajpayee has retired from active politicis leaving a void which the party is finding difficult to fill. The party fought the general elections under the leadership of second-in-command L K Advani.
The BJP's defeat was a major setback for Mr Advani and many believe that he is still reeling under the shock and has been unable to control the rebellion. The party clearly lacks a central authority like Mr Vajpayee.
Mr Advani could have overseen decision-making from the outside had he resigned with the responsibilty of the poll defeat. He might have also earned the respect of his partymen and the common people.
Unlike the party's slain leader Pramod Mahajn who had resigned from party positions after the BJP could not retain power in the 2004 elections, not even one leader stepped down this time.
The flip-flop by Mr Advani on the Kandahar issue has also marred his image. He has been accused of lying to the nation by claiming that he was ignorant of that Mr Singh accompanied captive terrorists to Afghan city in 1999 in exchange for the freedom of 169 passengers of the hijacked Indian Airlines flight 814.
Former national security advisor Brajesh Misra and former defence minister George Fernandes have refuted the claim saying he was aware of the incident.
Since early this year, the party has lost many of its credible faces. Former finance minister and senior leader Yashwant Sinha has resigned from all party posts. Mr Shourie, Mr Singh, Mr Sinha, Mr Vajpayee and Mr Mahajan were the main architects of the BJP's growth.
The party has grown from just two MPs in 1989 to become the single largest party in 1998.
The absence of these men have now left the party in shambles. Several other leaders have also left the party over the past six years including Uma Bharti, Kalyan Singh and K N Govindacharya.
The trouble in the BJP's camp is good news for the ruling Congress Party. While the lotus party is struggling to keep it's flock together, the Congress is enjoying the play of power thanks to a weak opposition.
So what makes the Congress stronger than the BJP at the moment? The tale of the two Gandhis can easily answer this question.
Congress' Rahul Gandhi and the BJP's Varun Gandhi arrived on the the country's political platform almost at the same time.
While Rahul is increasingly becoming popular in the country, Varun has been almost isolated due to his Muslim hate speech during the Lok Sabha polls in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh. He managed to win the seat but lost credibility as a politician.
However, the BJP has still not made its stand clear on the hate speech issue even after forensic labs confirmed that the voice in the speech was Varun's.
Despite all the odds, one cannot write off BJP. The party has grass-root workers in many states who will continue to work for it.
We as a country need a strong oppostion and if the BJP continues to wallow in its miseries, the country might face one-party domination once again.vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-70318616674752483042009-08-03T02:21:00.001-07:002009-08-03T02:21:37.553-07:00There was a friendThere are times when tomorrow is just a wee bit too late,It's today, my heart is in this abominable state.

There are times when tomorrow just cannot dry,The millions of tears on your shoulders I would cry.

There are times when your presence would have made my world seem all right,But I need it today, to bring me a new insight.

When my heart is weary and my soul seems sad,and you say "you took me for granted", I feel so bad.

Every time that you've called, be it night or in day,I've lent you my shoulder, I've shown you a way.

I've stood by your side through the thick and the thin,I wonder if I did wrong, committed a sin?

Sometimes I think its your way of saying "Move on,My need for you, seems now to have gone."

I know you must your horizons grow,I know the world to you, has a lot to show.

May you find fresh promise with each new tomorrow,For me, my yesterday was full of sorrow.

I needed you then, as you've many times needed meI'm learning, though slowly, things aren't what they seem to be.

I wonder how many tomorrows our friendship will weatherI know I'm close to the end of my tether.vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-91583225671495034642009-07-10T07:46:00.001-07:002009-07-10T07:53:03.426-07:00For meI know you're mad at me, It's ok. I don't know if you realise anger comes with love, joy with fear, upsets with caring and that love and hate are but two sides of the same coin. For me, every day is a roller coaster of despair and managing. Elation in between is rare. Contentment is the best solution, and I get there occasionally, so I guess I shouldn't complain. Within the same day, I can despair coz of you and feel very content too. Sometimes it is difficult to control either emotion, though I try very hard with both. However, I am like this, on an emotionally roller coaster ride most days. What is difficult about me is to remember that once the emotion is expressed, either in writing or it is said, it is over with. I am fairly like an open book with no malice. I realise it is difficut to deal with, which is why I ask you to forget me, when I do.vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-80843787138533263792009-01-21T05:28:00.000-08:002009-06-09T06:37:53.582-07:00A trip that wasn'tOne Friday night we were all scratching our heads to find a perfect birthday gift for Dielle. By exhausting all possible ideas I had already made my friends’ job a little difficult.

Vinod left early only to start thinking again the next day. Meanwhile, I poured a drink for myself hoping to better my thought process. Yash was savouring his drink as he always does. After a while my thoughts were all fuzzy. Royal Stag did it again; my few grey cells have this habit of going on a strike as soon as they feel some alcohol in the blood. Nevertheless, I think better without sweating my brain. "Everybody deserves to be pampered and we all need a little tranquillity now and then. D likes adventure and yes at times pampering as well."

Yash was taken aback when I made the above statement. Yash almost screamed, "How about a trek?" Vish improvised it by tossing up Gokarana as our destination.
Everything was planned and finally the ‘D-Day’ (read Dielle's Day! ) came. But, more fun was in the offing. In the morning we found that oil firms were on an indefinite strike. What the hell. I had told mum not to vote for Congress. She didn’t listen to me. They can’t even give us an uninterrupted gas supply.

The early morning excitement soon became a disaster. After endless number of calls to Bobby and Yashpal I had to call the trip off. No the story was not over yet, a twist in the tale was waiting. Bobby being a true juggler managed to arrange gas. Hurrah!! our trip plan was still afloat.

Knowing that 10pm is late night in Mangalore, we didn’t go out to buy stuff for the trip. No booze, no football and no sandwiches.

However, we started our trip at 5am, see we all are early-risers. lol

Singing, dancing and laughter full throat. I could sense that good times were ahead. Suddenly, D realised we are on the way to Udupi, "idlis on banana a leaf", she said in an overexcited tone. But to her bad luck, Udupivalas are not early-risers. No eatery was open. We had to wait for another 45 minutes to have our breakfast. Sipping steaming coffee and having warm idlis was an ideal way to start our day. As speed of the car increased our enthusiasm drastically went down. Idlis really made us sleep but Bobby had something else on his mind. He made us sing on his tunes or rather on tunes of his car’s accelerator. He was driving at 200kmph. I had never seen Vinod so alert. Meanwhile, we reached Gokarna. It didn’t give the look I was expecting. It looked like any other small town. But it was nature’s way of fooling me. As they say, best always comes later.

Meanwhile, as the car negotiated with the curves of the hilly way to the Om beach I was getting restless to see the famous blue waters of Gokarna.

To be continued…vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-20624824183889730602008-12-16T04:33:00.000-08:002009-01-22T03:45:31.862-08:00Lines for me
Sometimes a voice can help me through, much more than any song,
Sometimes a line will speed me on, when all else is going wrong,
Sometimes when troubled winds blow strong, when life is not worth a penny
Then I look to you for strength, as times before, they've been many.
When friends seem foes, when each face seems strange
When all my thoughts every day I must rearrange,
It's then I think of words you said from where much hope I've drawn
It's then I remember each new day that my life it is not forlorn.
"You are strong, you can fight."
The sky is blue, the clouds are white
When I search I know the day is bright.
My mind seems clouded and confused
I see things as if they are diffused.
I know there is a waiting light
I know it is merely out of sight
I must have faith in my own self
Or else, me, I cannot help.
I must not think that all is lost, I must not feel "I cannot",
I must do things I know I must, it's only time that I have bought.
I will work well because I know I can, not because it will make me a man
I think I'm worth it so I'll prove it well, not that otherwise I give a damn.
My life is mine, for me to lead
I am my source of energy
I am the sun, the ocean waves
I will not be anybody's slave.
I do not need to anybody prove
what I am made of, that is my own groove
I will strive to better my own self
to be there when others need my help.
vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-56835775409518912722008-12-09T04:50:00.000-08:002008-12-09T04:51:24.419-08:00Troubled TimesWhen the going gets tough, they say that HE tests people who are strong.

“And may be you are very strong.” I didn’t know how to react, so I just accepted.

It’s been two weeks and I am still in a rut. I am losing my calm nature, did weird things, moped around feeling kind of bummed out, complained a little (which is more than usual since I rarely complains), didn't call home or family, didn't post on my blog and finally lost sight of the big picture and the importance of things. It pretty much sucked, but the good news is, it will get over some day!

Today I woke up and realized that there are only 21 days left for the next year and that's not too shabby. I still have some important work to do here and I've done great wok so far, so I'm happy (contrary to other people’s thought). And it's ok that I was in a little rut, everyone goes through them here, and if 20 days of de-motivation is it for me, I'll take it. However, it shall not continue…Today when I walked into the office something was different. Music was playing on VH1. I love music, pretty much all kinds but a particular song was playing that is also one of my mom and my favourite songs. "When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going" by Billy Ocean. It brought back such a great memory of when I was a kid and my mom and my friend Viru’s mom, took me, Viru, his sister and my sister to the movies one afternoon by the Chowkabha hall (if memory serves) to see one of my favourite movies, "Anand". I first heard this song in his jeep and mum explained it to me.

I guess just passing the unknown or known roads, working hard and going to the gym (only once) just isn't cutting it anymore, you need to think of creative ways to keep your mind active (Sana - I'm still reading your book). So for me that means that I'll listen to a stupid Billy Ocean song once in a while, or think of silly 80s trivia (if you guys know any obscure 80s songs, lemme know), or my personal favourites, sometimes late at night, when I'm the last one to sleep. I'll stay outside in the dark for 10 minutes blasting my phone and dancing to myself.vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-69998394980979441672008-07-31T01:24:00.000-07:002009-01-22T03:49:27.227-08:00The ebb and a fall... someone saidWhen nothing seems to be working out right, when the heart is heavy and the soul weary, one tends to find solace in the recesses of one's memory. It is comforting to walk down memory lane, stop in front of your best friends' gate, chat a while and move on. It soothes the soul to remember a holiday, an event, a moment.

The sand beneath your feet is cold. The moonlight shimmers on the waves as they hurdle up to you, break at your feet, and silently slide back. The roar of the waves, the rustling of the coconut trees and the sounds of your breath are the only things that matter. The cool breeze plays on your skin as you pull your shawl closer around your shoulders. The nip in the air is welcome. It stirs the mind and dulls the soul. It stimulates the nerves as adrenalin rushes through your body. You know you can easily fall asleep on these shores as long as you can feel this.

You sit down on the cool sand. The waves rush up to you in a swell, and recede silently. They are speaking to you. They are telling you that good times will come again, as surely as the next wave will. They are coaxing you to wash your heavy heart one wave at a time, till you are cleansed like the sparkling beach. Time stands still as you sit on the sand, listening to the wisdom of the waves, the comfort of the breeze and the voices in the trees. You see the crabs scamper past as they dart across the freshly washed shore, making fresh patterns. You see fresh hope.

The angle of the shimmer on the water has changed. The moon seems higher in the sky. It has taken a while for you to understand the language of the waves. There is always an ebb and then a fall. The distance, the time between these is what is difficult. You can now lie down on the sand, and look up at the millions of stars in the crystal clear sky. Nowhere on earth can you see more stars than under this sky, in this thumbnail of the world. You can travel to Orion, to Pleades and to whichever other constellation you wish. You can reach for the stars, literally. And no distance matters anymore. Not between the ebb and the fall... not between you and the stars.

And that is where you find your peace, your corner in the world. That is when your step becomes lighter, your smile brighter.vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-87199478212789420012008-07-08T02:33:00.000-07:002008-07-08T02:34:53.243-07:00जिंदगी चलने का नाम हैAfter reading Jyoti Sanyal's obituaries....
There is only one single moment between life and death. So often, there isn't any time for goodbye's. Whatever you've left behind is all that there is; there may never be that final moment to set things 'right'. Somewhere, sometime, I remember someone telling me... There is no certainty in life, so live every minute as if its your last. Enjoy every moment of your life to the fullest, and don't regret what you couldn't do. Take life's simple pleasures seriously - a sunrise, the breeze on a hot day, the sound of waves as they crash against rocks, the smile of a friend, the tears through which the smile slips out.... Enjoy the laughter of the ones you love, the mischief of the little fellows even when you're tired, and remember that life is beautiful.... if you only let it be. Talk to the people who matter to you, and don't be afraid to tell the people who matter, that they do. Don't ever say, 'I'll do it tomorrow", for there may not be any tomorrow. And yesterday is history, so don't hold any grudges, and look forward to every new day. And you will die a happy man, you will die a free soul....
When there is only one life (that we will remember), live it in a way that you choose... there will always be people who will appreciate you only after you are gone, there will always be those that malign you, but be the man you would want to admire, and other's will surely admire you. Don't aspire to gain their admiration, you will only fall. Live to please yourself, while being considerate of others, and you will find that the world will make space for you.vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-90874582260630297942008-07-01T03:07:00.000-07:002008-07-01T03:09:12.510-07:00दक्षिण भारतीयों को बस एक ही नाम से जानते हैं "मद्रासी"तीन साल पहले तक कर्नाटक, तमिलनाडु या केरल ये सब मेरे लिए बस एक नाम थे.

vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-76401235726492464822008-04-18T03:11:00.000-07:002008-04-18T03:26:01.974-07:00Laal Salam in Nepal

The jury over Nepal general election is out.
Proving all the predictions wrong, the Nepalese Congress (Mao) has registered a landslide victory. Led by charismatic leader Prachanda, the latest entrant in Nepal politics has sent a stunner to major political players of Nepal. After the poll results, while Prachanda was quick to announce the end of monarchy in Nepal, opposition parties were busy licking their wounds. In the face of it, opposition parties are now left with no other choice than joining the new government led by the Maoists Congress of Nepal.
The history of red march in Nepal is full of twist and turns. In the shadow of monarchy in Nepal, Prachanda decided to take the roads never taken in the history of the country. He had the dream of monarchy-free Nepal, even if it required bloodshed. For more than two decades the Maoists fought for the cause giving and taking lives.
Initially, the government and Narayanhiti palace managed to outcast the rebel fighters as terrorists. In the two decades of killings from both the sides, the cause, the reason and the sacrifices of the red brigade never came out.
Up to an extent, the Maoists are themselves to be blamed for this. Their leaders barely came out from the hiding and the government managed to dub them as a force greedy for money and power.
After the tragic end of the most celebrated King Virendra Vikram Shah and his rule in 2001, Nepal found itself into the certain sea of uncertainty. Major political parties ended up mere puppets in the hands of the new king Gyanendra and the public good held no value in the agenda of the new government.
Inflation was soaring and the prices were on the rise, it was a perfect time for Prachanda and his force to mouth the voice of the common man. He grabbed the opportunity and managed to shed the image of a ‘bloodthirsty’ unit. This was the time when Prachanda evolved as a leader of the masses and decided to play active role in politics. He got a fair share respect in the politics and played an important role in installing the new guard in Nepal in 2006. However, the west countries and political pundits in India never gave him the thumbs-up and underplayed his potential.
Now after proving all the odds wrong, the Maoists will have a task to prove. They will have to break the myth that they can only fight and running a nation is beyond their wings.
Nevertheless, it is time to say ‘Lal Saalam’ in Nepal.vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1424950074946248325.post-21142188677200911312008-04-15T10:55:00.000-07:002008-04-19T01:33:33.563-07:00Life Goes On
After reading Jyoti Sanyal's obituaries....

Live to please yourself, while being considerate of others, and you will find that the world will make space for you.
vikas pandeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02670834610081293845noreply@blogger.com0
